The commercials are back according to a press release that arrived in my inbox this morning. Every year the St. Louis Cardinals (and really teams around baseball) do annual commercials that get shown during their games. In previous years there was a theme like “Play like a Cardinal” or “We are Cardinal Nation.” However this year there doesn’t seem to be an overriding motto.
Rather than release them all at the same time as they have in previous years, the organization is using a “film festival” style release with each ad being released on the internet on their web and social media presences. What this means is, you’ll have to keep coming back for more. Unless you just wait until Friday night to view them all at once.
Right now three commercial spots are released. Skip Schumaker showing off his impressive glove collection to Allen Craig, Adam Wainwright telling Jake Westbrook and Kyle Lohse about his personal twitterer, and then one of all the players still finding confetti everywhere.
I was underwhelmed by the confetti one, I think it could have been a lot of more funny and that’s really been at the core of a lot of these commercials over the year. They’ve shown us the playful side of some of the players and made us laugh. That one is more of something you’d expect to see at the end of a 2011 season recap than during a 2012 game. But they are Cardinals’ commercials.

Cardinals debut 2012 TV Ad campaign
Fans enjoy sneak previews on team’s social media outlets
ST. LOUIS – March 29, 2012 – Fans that follow the Cardinals online and via social media have been among the first to see the team’s new lineup of television spots.
While the TV campaign will begin officially on local television this Sunday, fans are already enjoying the exclusive sneak preview. Each of the ten spots is being individually debuted this week on the Cardinals’ Facebook page (facebook/cardinals), Twitter feed (@cardinals) and website (cardinals.com/tvads).
“We thought it would be fun to provide fans a sneak preview via a film festival format by releasing the spots one at a time through Facebook, Twitter and the team website,” said Dan Farrell, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “We want to get fans engaged and create some buzz for the ad campaign.”
The first three ads were unveiled yesterday, with the remainder slated to debut over the next two days. Fan feedback to the ads has been very positive, with hundreds of fans engaging in a dialogue about the spots on both Facebook and Twitter (#cardstvads). Once all of the spots are live on the website, fans will be able to vote for their favorites on the page as well.
Filmed in February during Cardinals spring training in Jupiter, Fla., the campaign again incorporates many of the team’s key players, including Matt Holliday, Adam Wainwright, David Freese and more. The campaign was developed by the team’s new advertising agency HLK Advertising of St. Louis.
