Cardinals option Mayers and purchase Lucas
What it means
Mayers was recalled yesterday when Adam Wainwright was placed on the disabled list. He came into Friday night’s game with a 10-3 lead and promptly surrendered five runs, four of them earned. The brief appearance inflated his ERA in the Majors this season to 11.57.
He has yet to find any stable footing in his big league career after leading it off allowing 9 earned runs in his first career start. In 7 career appearances over the past two seasons, Mayers has allowed 24 earned runs in 10 innings.
In his place will be Memphis Redbirds closer Josh Lucas. Lucas, 26, was a 21st round pick of the Cardinals in 2010 draft as a college senior. He has a 3.45 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 56.2 innings with Memphis this season and has 14 saves. He has a 2.83 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over his past 10 appearances.
I give it a 1/10 on the impact scale. The addition of Lucas to the bullpen now puts two former Redbirds closers in the mix with Sam Tuivailala also in the big league bullpen. However, it really doesn’t matter who is in the bullpen or how well they pitch as long as Mike Matheny always goes to his main guys in crunch time.
