Rotations, rosters set for NLDS

The rosters and rotations were set today for the National League Divisonal Series between the Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals today.

For the Cardinals, they will add Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, and Chris Carpenter to the roster. The three were left off of the Wild Card Game roster as they would not be being used in the game. In exchange, LHP Sam Freeman, catcher Bryan Anderson, and shortstop Ryan Jackson will be left off.

It’s worth nothing that the moves leave Marc Rzepczyski as the only left handed reliever on the roster. Meanwhile, the moves of Jackson and Anderson off the roster were not unexpected. Neither received much playing time in September and were basically there as depth in a “just in case” situation.

As far as the rotation, Adam Wainwright (14-13, 3.94) has been confirmed as the starter of Game 1 in Busch Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Wainwright will start opposite Gio Gonzalez (21-8, 2.89). Wainwright’s last start against Washington was his final start of the season. He allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits over 6 innings in a 12-2 Cardinals victory. He will have his work cut out for him as the Cardinals struggled against Gonzalez on August 31st, as he pitched a 5-hit shutout. The game is scheduled for 3 pm Eastern on TBS.

Jaime Garcia (7-7, 3.92) will start Game 2, with the Cardinals making an effort to keep him starting at home. Garcia started on August 30th in Washington and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Keeping Garcia pitching at home should bode well for the Cardinals as he has a 5.02 ERA on the road and a 2.82 ERA in Busch Stadium. Garcia will face off against Jordan Zimmermann (12-8, 2.94). The game will be on Monday evening at 4:30 pm Eastern on TBS.

The series will then move to Washington for the final three games. Chris Carpenter (0-2, 3.71) is scheduled to start Game 3 of the series. Though he missed all but the final two weeks of the season, Carpenter made three solid starts at the end of the season, improving in each one. The Cardinals are confident that he can turn in a quality start for them. He has been the hard luck loser in two of his starts. He will be facing off against former Cardinal Edwin Jackson (10-11, 4.03). Jackson played a key role in the 2011 team that won the World Series. The game will be on Wednesday. Game time is currently TBD and the game is expected to be on TBS, however according to a Cardinals’ press release, may be moved to the MLB Network.

Game 4 will feature Wild Card Game starter Kyle Lohse (16-3, 2.86). Lohse was one of the top pitchers in the National League this year and he will be the first Cardinals’ starter to start his second game. He pitched September 1st against Washington in D.C. and allowed 8 runs, 5 earned, over 5 2/3 innings in a 10-9 Cardinals’ win. He followed that up with a 6 inning start where he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits on September 29th. He will match up against Ross Detwiler (10-8, 3.40) in Game 4 on Thursday.

Game 5 will take place on Friday, October 12th. While neither team has officially announced their probable starters for that game, we can safely assume that it would again be Adam Wainwright v. Gio Gonzalez at Nationals Park for all the marbles.
