Quick Hits: Cardinals All Stars

The MLB All Star Game will be played tomorrow night and, for the first time since the 2007 season and just the fifth time in the last 20 seasons, the Cardinals will not have a player starting the All Star Game.

Matt Carpenter had been the team’s chosen representative before he was injured last week and replaced by Aledmys Diaz. Diaz though is very worthy successor, batting .315 with 13 HR this year and, with a 141 OPS+, is the Cardinals’ second best hitter behind Carpenter.

Quick Hits: Can Michael Wacha win 20 games?

Michael Wacha has a 9-3 record through his first 14 starts this season. He also has a 2.85 ERA and 136 ERA+ that stacks him up as the 19th best starting pitcher in baseball this season (among starting pitchers with at least 10 games started). So the question is whether Wacha can continue this pace to become the third different Cardinals pitcher to win 20 games in the last 13 years?

Carpenter likely out for season

The Cardinals’ General Manager John Mozeliak announced this afternoon that he didn’t expect Chris Carpenter to pitch for the team in 2013. The issues surrounding his arm with stingers and tingling have returned. It may be the answer to the question I asked earlier this offseason of what do you do about Chris Carpenter.

While the “R” word wasn’t mentioned as many speculated it would be, it was pretty clear listening to Mozeliak and Mike Matheny that they believe that Carpenter has thrown his last major league pitch. I read some reports that Carpenter was close to calling it a career after the rib surgery last year, but was convinced to push and come back for a playoff run.

What to do about Chris Carpenter?

When I think about the greatest Cardinals’ pitcher of the last decade, my mind immediately goes to Chris Carpenter. I think most Cardinals’ fans’ minds would too. Over the last decade, when number 29 was on the mound you knew he was going to give it everything he had in the tank. If there was just one single ounce of greatness left in him, he was going to find it and use it. It was this same gritty determination that Carpenter used to give the Cardinals their eleventh World Series championship in 2011.

Rotations, rosters set for NLDS

The rosters and rotations were set today for the National League Divisonal Series between the Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals today.

For the Cardinals, they will add Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, and Chris Carpenter to the roster. The three were left off of the Wild Card Game roster as they would not be being used in the game. In exchange, LHP Sam Freeman, catcher Bryan Anderson, and shortstop Ryan Jackson will be left off.
